Terminology

For the purpose of basic understanding, the following definitions shall apply:


Door Closer (Hydraulically Regulated):

A hydraulic door closer is equipment for closing of doors by the help of spring control valve such that the phase of closing is slowed down by the hydraulic damper.


Anti-Clockwise Door (Right Hand Door):

A door which, when viewed from above rotates in an anti-clockwise direction about its hinges while opening.


Clockwise Door (Left Hand Door) :

A door which, when viewed from above rotates in an clockwise direction about its hinges while opening.


A Right Door Closer :

A door closer which is required to be used on an anti-clockwise door


A Left Door Closer :

A door closer which is required to be used on a clockwise door.


A Universal Closer :

A door closer which is suitable for the working of both an anti-clockwise as well as for clockwise door without any change in the parts of closer. This is the most widely used type of door closer.


Closer Size :

A term used to describe the strength of a door closer. Generally, the greater the door width, the larger the closer size should be.


Closing Cycle :

This is a term used to describe the door swing from its fully open position to the fully closed position.


Handicap Code :

Also called barrier code or accessibility code, is a term used to describe a standard that is intended for use in making buildings and facilities accessible to the handicapped.


Hold Open :

Optional mechanical feature that is incorporated into the door closer arm assembly. Hold open arms cannot be used on "UL" or fire rated door assemblies.


Latch Speed :

The cycle of closing from about 10° to door closed. This cycle is controlled by a valve to either speed up (to overcome a latch bolt) or slow down the closing of the door. (keep the door quiet).


Multi-Size :

Door Closers with adjustable spring power, to permit the adjustment of closing power to meet the needs of most doors. They are available with normal power range adjustments (Sizes 2-6) or with barrier code and power range adjustments (Sizes 1-4).


Rigid Parallel Arm :

An exceptionally sturdy arm assembly, for parallel arm application only.
